EASD congratulates Dr. Kelly Demerath as one of the Kohl Principal Leadership 2023 award winners. Dr. Demerath was recognized for her leadership and innovation through the expansion of the Career and College Academy on Gateway Technical College’s campus from 70 to over 200 students (adding grades 9 and 10), the successful completion of the Department of Labor YouthBuild project (50 students constructed a single-family home in Whitewater), and the numerous pathways for students to earn certifications and technical diplomas in fields such as cosmetology, culinary arts, welding, and construction.
Dr. Demerath’s grant writing and program innovation efforts have won over $2.5 million in state and federal grant funding for the EASD and Walworth County communities in the areas of mental health resources for youth, youth apprenticeship programming and increasing access for all students to graduate high school with industry-recognized credentials and free college credits.
What are Dr. Demerath and her awesome team working on now? - creating an Associate’s Degree pathway with Gateway Technical College (beginning Summer 2023) that provides approximately $20,000 in tuition-free college savings for students and families (along with a straight transfer to any UW System 4-year college), partnering with Lake Lawn Resort to create a supported employment pathway for students who benefit from job coaching as they enter the workforce, and partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Walworth County for the next YouthBuild project.
