In 2019 the Nicholas D. Sergi Foundation began a partnership with the Elkhorn Area School District that has resulted in lasting and impactful projects for our schools and our community. The latest of these is the Nicholas D. Sergi Fitness and Nature Trail.
Located off of East Market Street between Rotary Way and the Elkhorn Area Middle School, the trail consists of trees, tall grass, flowers, and wetland. The trail is now open for walking, biking, cross country skiing, and in the Spring of 2022 will feature outdoor fitness equipment for public use.
The Nicholas D. Sergi Foundation (NDS) was established by the Sergi family when Nicholas D. Sergi, founder of Sergi Farms, passed away in 2018. Nick not only had a passion for farming but also an intense faith and an unending desire to help anyone he could. The NDS Foundation raises funds to support a variety of organizations; with a focus on those that strengthen families, promote strong communities, encourage faith, and enrich youth through their mission: “Enriching lives through the transformative power of giving.”
In that vein, the NDS worked with Elkhorn YouthBuild students from the Career and College Academy to construct two bridges on the property to ensure access and enhancement to the entire trail system.
EASD and NDS are excited for the community and students to enjoy this area and its continued development moving forward.
